Elementary School Program
DEAR PRINCIPAL, ACTIVITIES INSTRUCTORS AND PAC CHAIR
THIS YEAR, invite one of our experienced PRESENTERS to help you achieve some of your PRESCRIBED LEARNING OUTCOMES: |
Kindergarten to Grade 3: Students will learn to apply the 4-key survival skills on safety every time they cross the street, play outdoors at school and in their neighborhoods or travel on the road.
| "THE SPIRIT TO SURVIVE" |
Grades 4-7: Observing the application of the 4-key survival skills will help Students learn how to assess the potential for risk or injury, and to learn key strategies to help them stay injury-free. |
MOTHER NATURE has a mind of her own! "THE SPIRIT TO SURVIVE" program can provide the opportunity for Elementary Students to learn survival strategies from a highly qualified Professional Athlete or Adventurer in a dynamic and memorable presentation. Students will be highly motivated and engaged to learn how to recognize and assess nature's power and to understand the importance of risk management.
The BC Injury Prevention Centre's lifesaving injury prevention program introduces Students to 4-Key Survival Skills, which incorporates a conceptual approach to injury-free living. Our World-Class Professional Athletes support the application of this concept with dynamic, interactive presentations that visually express their life experiences! Through spectacular slides or action-packed video, Students can see examples of how a Professional Athlete or Adventurer prepares for all of their challenging events, races or stunts!
The Presenters will bring some of their protective gear used in the various activities and show short animated video clips for the younger students. Students are invited to not only learn the 4-key survival skills, but to also apply those skills to each and every activity including on road travel, recreational activities, and travel to and from school. |

THE 4-KEY SURVIVAL SKILLS
When Students lack knowledge and training, the consequences can be devastating. Serious injuries or worse can happen in a split second! The causes are often due to haste, lack of control, inattention, lack of experience or a bad attitude. Learning to apply the 4-key survival skills every time to all their activities will become automatic after practise and could help save their life and others. |
Students will learn how to assess their levels of training and experience. For example, crossing the street at an intersection is a high-risk activity. As Teachers, you know that there is a fine line between challenging yourself to your personal limit and being over-confident! This injury-free zone concept encourages Students to plan, to be prepared, and to seek the appropriate training for whichever activity they are planning. Checking their physical environment is the third survival skill. They can do a mental check of their personal and physical environment, which includes their body in relation to their immediate environment.
And, the fourth and final skill is to evaluate their attitude – What is their attitude as they are about to commence the activity? Having a positive mental attitude is the most important of the 4-key Survival Skills! All of our Presenters conduct a mental attitude check every time they participate in an activity to help them be prepared for every possibility that comes their way! |

PRESENTERS
This year's Presenters, who are certified specialists in their fields, include Dave Norona, a World-Class Adventure Racer and Elite Multi-Sport Athlete; Nesta Chapman, a Sky Diving Champion Instructor and Film Stunt Performer and Kevin Vallely, a World-Class Explorer and Adventure Racer. |
When they are not paddling the worlds' rivers, racing their bikes down mountainous terrain, or performing in film stunts and world-record formation skydives, these "passionate adventurers" can be found motivating young people to live life to the fullest by practicing good risk assessment strategies and maximizing their potential in the pursuit of excellence. |
