About us

Welcome to Injury Free Zone, the BC Injury Prevention Centre's specialized lifesaving injury prevention program for Sport & Recreational Users, On-Road Travelers, Parents, Families and Youth.

Injuries can happen in the blink of an eye and research shows that they not only happen fast, but they can occur more often than all diseases combined. Children and youth are more at risk because they are still not physically and mentally prepared to participate in their outdoor activities. Research shows that kids learn skills by imitating the behaviours of their parents. Moms and dads can help protect their children from injury by creating safe environments for themselves, which their kids will imitate. By using the 4-key survival skills on this site and setting a good example, moms and dads can teach their kids the spirit to survive!

The British Columbia Injury Prevention Centre has lead the way in B.C. for twenty-one years promoting lifesaving survival strategies in high-risk environments including sport and recreational activities, and travel on the road. The BC Injury Prevention Centre began its injury prevention programs in the classrooms with teachers and students back in 1989 to the virtual classroom with parents and youth in 2011. Our injury prevention programs have expanded on-line to several new media platforms including our website, Youtube, Twitter and Facebook,  Television Advertising and the spirit 2 survive channel.

Visitors to our site will have the opportunity to learn how to recognize and assess their abilities to stay safer in any outdoor environment and to understand the importance of risk management. We have an innovative, flash web site that receives a high volume of traffic. During the last five years the site has received over 400,000 website sessions, 2.5 million page views and 12.8 million hits. The Injury Free Zone website features articles for parents promoting lifesaving skills for their children and teens, public service TV messages, free flash games and videos with riders in full gear.

The BC Injury Prevention Centre's lifesaving injury prevention program, the "Spirit 2 Survive", introduces our audience to 4-Key Survival Skills that incorporates a conceptual approach to calculated risk-taking. Our audience can develop lifesaving injury prevention skills to apply to all their outdoor activities in a fun and interactive way.

The British Columbia Injury Prevention Centre has also enlisted the help of the Mountain Biking community to help curb the rising injury rate. Our search for a World-Class Ambassador came riding to our rescue from the North Shore. Wade Simmons is World-Class in all that he does. Whether he's competing as a Professional Freerider in races all over the planet, motivating young riders or filming video segments, Wade is a dedicated rider and mentor. For these reasons and many more he was the perfect candidate for the role as the BC Injury Prevention Centre's Ambassador in British Columbia.

The British Columbia Injury Prevention Centre is part of Trauma Services, Vancouver Coastal Health and is located at Vancouver General Hospital in Vancouver, British Columbia.
